Artist Statement
I use animation software to create hand-drawn animated characters and backgrounds with which I create animated short films. I also try to use these shorts as an opportunity to strengthen my writing skills and acting skills as I put my voice into my work both literally and figuratively.
Inspired by cartoons seen in film, on television and online, I aim to make audiences laugh through odd interactions between quirky characters with interesting personalities. For example, in my animated short, How the Sausage is Made, two characters communicate in humorous ways due to their unique dispositions. As a fan of film and animation, I’ve come to realize that great art either makes you think or makes you feel, and the best art makes you do both. In his 1993 ESPY speech, Jim Valvano says, “Think about it. You laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day.” When I create something I want it to contribute at least one of those things to someone’s day, and even if it’s just a small chuckle I feel like I’ve accomplished what I’ve set out to do. |
